It took until the 12th minute before the spectators saw the first serious goalmouth action with Watt sending his shot over the bar.

Urquhart was unlucky to see his half-volley from distance scrape the Renfrew uprightbefore Frew keeper Black did well to save a Ronald strike.

With the game developing into a midfield tussleneither goalkeepers were rarely troubledthen three minutes before the breakthe stalemate was broken when Gault brought down Ronald in the penalty box.

Referee Penson pointed to the spot then flashed a red card in the direction of the Frew skipper.

Willie Sawyers stepped up to slam the award past Black for his 30th goal of the season.

With numerical advantage, Rabs began the second half looking to add to their one goal lead, from a Sawyers pass Urquhart fired narrowly past the post, Sawyers headed a Watt cross wide then Martin shot into the side netting.

In the 73rd minute, Renfrew broke up field and won a corner on the right, from the kick some diabolical defending allowed the unmarked Mort to bullet home a powerful header.

Rabs again pushed forward but in front of goal Watt sent his effort into orbit. Ten minutes later, the home side restored their lead after Urquhart laid a defence splitting pass into the path of the on rushing Mitchell for the substitute to slot the ball home with composure.

Rabs lead, however, lasted only two minutes when Carter was penalised in the box for jersey tugging, and Boyd duly converted from the spot.

Just as it looked like the tie would be decided on a penalty kick shoot-out, Rabs delivered the killer blow in the 87th minute when Morton sent over a penetrating cross into the Frew goalmouth for Mitchell to slot the ball home to seal a low key victory for the Adamslie Park side, but nevertheless a quarter final spot against Lesmahagow.
