WATERSIDE never turned up for the first half of this match, conceding two early goals caused by poor passing, poor decisions and confusion in defence.

Linwood scored on eight minutes when a poor pass went between both central defenders and was picked up by the Linwood striker, who ran through and fired home from 12 yards. Linwood scored a second two minutes later when they broke down the left, cut inside and fired into the corner. Gordon Passmore spared ‘Side’s blushes on 15 minutes with a headed goal-line clearance.
Waterside eventually got into the match with 10 minutes of the first half left when Fitzsimmons’ header from a Tooth corner was headed off the line. O’Donnell came close on 41 minutes, but his shot from the right was saved.
Waterside pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time when Fitzsimmons broke through the Linwood defence and fired home from 10 yards, following good work from Carr.
McLeod replaced O’Donnell at the start of the second half, but Waterside found themselves 3–1 down when another defensive mistake saw the Linwood winger break away and coolly slot past Barr.
Barr saved Side from going further behind on 52 minutes, pulling off a point-blank save. Side responded and started causing Linwood problems, with Campbell and Caldwell linking well on the right.
Caldwell’s shot on 53 minutes from the edge of the box was tipped over. Carr’s shot four minutes later was blocked and his header from the resulting corner was saved. Then McLeod’s shot on 59 minutes was pushed round the post following good link-up play with Fitzsimmons.
Side were awarded a penalty on 62 minutes, which Fitzsimmons confidently converted into the bottom right.
Thompson replaced Tooth on 67 minutes and then Caldwell’s rifled 20-yard shot was turned over the bar moments later. J.M. Kerr replaced Carr with 12 minutes left and linked up well with Caldwell.
Fitzsimmons had two chances to level the tie but unfortunately both efforts were off target.
