A fine first half performance against champions Auckinleck Talbot couldn’t stop Rob Roy crashing to their third straight loss on Saturday.
The Kirkintilloch team went in at half-time 2-2, but two unanswered goals in the second half saw Rabs beaten 4-2 - a carbon-copy of the scoreline against Linlithgow Rose in a friendly five days earlier.
Gaffer Stewart Maxwell lamented the way his team had given away “soft” goals, but said he was still delighted by both the effort put in by his squad and the passion shown by the Rob Roy supporters.
He said: “I was pleased with the first half. We competed well, maybe edged it on posession and deserved at least a draw. Unfortunately, giving away silly goals cost us again. We’re working hard to get goals and then losing them cheaply at the other end.
“We do have seven players out injured though, so to make a decent fist of it against the top team in the country is a good sign for our young team.”
This weekend’s league tie against Petershill will have extra spice, as Maxwell returns to his former club for the first time.
He said: “I had a successful spell there and know what they are capable of, so it will be a tough game. We just have to scrap to get as many points as we can.”
Rob Roy play Petershill at Petershill Park on Saturday. Kick-off is at 2pm.
