Rabs got off the mark with a 4-1 thumping of landlords Cumbernauld United at Guy’s Meadow on Saturday.

And after what he felt were harsh defeats by Darvel and Beith in their opening two games, Maxwell was delighted to see his side succeed as the third time of asking.

“Some of the stuff in the first half was scintillating, really attack-minded and we dominated,” said Maxwell. “It could have been five or six at half-time. That wouldn’t have been an unfair reflection.

“Their keeper, Darren Hill, was outstanding. He saved a penalty and two or three point-blank saves to keep it at 3-1.

“Some of the passing and movement, progression through the park was tremendous. They had one chance and they scored from it.

“It’s as good as I’ve seen for a long time from a Rob Roy team, passing and moving. Cumbernauld are a good footballing side. I know they’ll be disappointed with the result but the two teams put on a good footballing show.

“The signs have been good. That victory’s been coming.

“I was really pleased we showed what we’re capable of, but it’s only one game and the challenge now is to keep the bar raised and keep that standard.”

This Saturday, Rob Roy host league leaders Clydebank.

The Bankies, bossed by Gordon Moffat, Maxwell’s former assistant at Rob Roy, have one all three games so far.

But Maxwell is hoping his side can get a lift from their first win and rise to the challenge of being the first tieam to take points off the table toppers.

He said: “They [Cumbernauld] came out for the second half and for the first 15 minutes were the better side,” he said.

“But one of the most pleasing things was that we soaked up a bit of pressure and went up the park and scored.

“You’ve got to be able to do that at this level because there are good teams and you’re not always going to have it your own way.

“It’s a young team and I think that victory gives them belief that they can build on that.

“It will be hard because there are so many good teams in this league but it’s got to give them confidence to know that they can go and win games and win games with a wee bit of style.”
