ROB Roy’s interest in this season’s Central League Cup ended following a penalty shoot-out after they squandered a two-goal second-half lead.

Central League Cup 3rd Round

Thistle were first to threaten, with Russell bringing out a smart save from Rabs keeper Mark Wilson.

Rabs began to dominate with Craig shooting wide. Gow – after beating two defenders – sent in an inviting cross which drifted past the far post. Then from a Palmer cross Sinclair headed over the bar.

Rabs took a deserved lead in the 35th minute when Paul Craig latched on to a McMenamin through pass to fire past Mailey. Within the space of a few minutes the Jags equalised when Barry Russell rose to head home a corner from the right.

Just as it looked like the sides were going in at the interval all square, Rabs again took the lead when Craig ran down the left wing before sending over a perfect low cross, giving Craig Feroz the easy task of prodding the ball into the net from close range.

Rabs came out for the second half positively with Craig’s header deflected for a corner and Sinclair heading past. Then in the 58th minute they increased their lead when Gary Gow powerfully headed a Sinclair cross past Mailey. Thistle pulled a goal back in the 65th minute when Russell took full advantage of a woefully short Carter pass-back to tuck the ball beyond Wilson.

With 10 minutes remaining Thistle levelled after a lapse of concentration in the visitors defence allowed Brodie to rifle the ball past Wilson.

East Kilbride were now playing with confidence and Anderson was not far away from sending his side in front. Rabs were reduced to 10 men in the 84th minute when Feroz, who had been earlier booked, was sent off for diving. Upton should have won the game for Rabs in the final minute, but keeper Mailey blocked his effort.

In the penalty shoot-out, Rabs’ first three spot-kicks from Carter, McQuilken and Sinclair were all saved by Mailey and while Upton scored with his, Thistle fired home three of their kicks to take the tie.
