Rossvale tribute to tragic teenage keeper

Stephen Roy, from Paisley, passed away last week at the age of just 18.

The youngster was a regular in ’Vale’s 1998s side and played a key role in helping them land a remarkable trophy treble.

Club official Paul O’Donnell said: “Stephen played for our 1998s who were coached by Stuart Giltinan, Scott Syme and myself.

“He was an intergral part of our squad during our most successful season 2013-2014 when we completed the treble of Glasgow and District league winners, Regional Cup winners and Scottish Cup winners.

“One of my happiest memories of Stephen was his performance in goal during our Scottish Cup tie in November 2013 when he was the hero in a penalty shoot out against Dundee United who were the previous two seasons’ finalists.

“He came from the Paisley area and says a lot about his dedication by travelling to Bishopbriggs for training and for games.

“As a character he was always in the thick of the banter in our dressing room with the rest of our squad during a period when humour and practical jokes were a plenty.

“He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this time.”

As well as his successful time with Rossvale, Stephen also won the SSFA Shield with Paisley Grammar and also played for Greenock Morton, Gleniffer Thistle and Glenvale AFC amongst others.
