Young rugby stars have success on a Plate

YOUNG rugby stars shone in a final day showdown to decide the winner of the West Regional Plate League.

Glenzie U16 team – made up of players from Allan Glen’s and Lenzie rugby clubs – played GHA U16s in a winner-takes-all final league game on Sunday, April 17.

Glenzie started in their normal way, taking the game to GHA. However, the final pass was letting them down. It was GHA who opened the scoring in the 13th minute following a good passage of running play and poor defence from Glenzie. The conversion was missed to make the score 5-0 for GHA.

This was a new experience for Glenzie as they had always taken the lead in their four previous Plate games.

From the restart, Glenzie put the home side under pressure and were rewarded with their first try of the game, scored in the 23rd minute by Jamie Cribbes. The conversion was missed. The score was now 5-5.

From the restart, Glenzie took the game back to GHA and in the 31st minute Kieran McDonald scored Glenzie’s second try. The conversion was successfully kicked by Craig Bowhay to make the half-time score 12-5 for Glenzie.

Glenzie started slowly in the second half as GHA put them under pressure. It was only excellent defence work and tackling that stopped GHA from scoring.

Then in the 45th minute, following a scrum just on the Glenzie 22-metre line, Kevin Howie – on as a replacement for Matt Moore – collected a pass from scrum half Seb Dixon and ran up the park, side-stepping four defenders to score Glenzie’s third try.

The conversion was successfully kicked by Craig Bowhay to make the score 19-5 for Glenzie.

GHA continued to put Glenzie under pressure and it was only a matter of time before GHA scored their second try. This came in the 55th minute. The conversion was successful to make the score 19-12 for Glenzie.

GHA continued to put Glenzie under pressure and after five minutes they scored their third try. The conversion was missed to make the score GHA 17-19 Glenzie.

In the final 10 minutes, both teams started to make errors as the warm conditions started to affect the players.

Both teams had opportunities to add to their scores, but for the final pass going amiss.

At full time, the Glenzie players started their celebrations – realising that they had won the Plate League and maintained their 100 per cent unbeaten record.

Both GHA and Glenzie played entertaining rugby in the true spirit of the game. The large crowd present had seen a great game of rugby.

Congratulations to all the players and coaches associated with Glenzie U16 Team.

A big thank you to the team’s sponsor – Millersneuk Dental Practice – for providing the team and coaches with kit.
