A David Gormley inspired Rob Roy saw new Adamslie Park manager Jimmy Lindsay achieve victory in his first competitive match in charge.

Defensive disjointedness, however, threatened to derail what should have been a comfortable Rob Roy win.

Four times Cumbernauld United levelled the Kirkintilloch Super League club before Rob Roy substitute Kieran McAleenan crisply struck the winning goal 10 minutes from time after a Gormley cross.

It was new signing Gormley who put Rabs ahead just 13 minutes in when he ran from the halfway line, twisting centre-half Andy Dearie inside and out, before cutting in and shooting below David Buchanan.

But four minutes later Cumbernauld equalised when sloppy Rabs play on the touchline allowed Paul McDougall to cross for Dominic O’Halloran to head into the top corner.

Rob Roy regained the advantage when astute thinking from Alan Lindsay saw Gormley run onto a quickly taken free-kick and round the on-rushing goalkeeper to tap into the net.

Cumbernauld looked to have gone into the interval level when McDougall nodded in Danny Burns’ cross but a well-worked corner kick saw Jim Coulter strongly sidefoot home for 3-2 from the edge of the box on the stroke of half-time.

After a first-half which Rob Roy dominated, 3-2 seemed a flattering scoreline for the visitors but whatever Rabs boss Lindsay said at the break appeared to go in one ear and out the other as more slack defending saw an unmarked McDougall head Cumbernauld level again just four minutes into the second period.

Gormley then completed a deserved hat-trick when he steered a bouncing cross from Willie Easton into the far corner.

Cumbernauld’s Paul Barkley, however, was allowed two attempts on goal from James Steele’s low corner kick 20 minutes from time and made no mistake with the second to notch yet another Cumbernauld equaliser.

Both sides had chances to win it before McAleenan finally sealed Rob Roy’s victory.
