Ian wins his maiden Scottish tennis title

A former doctor has aced his way to the Scottish over 65’s Doubles Tennis Championship, held recently at Whitecraigs Tennis Club.

It’s the first national title secured by retired A&E consultant Ian Swann, who plays at Milngavie Tennis Club.

Ian, from Strathblane, partnered by Colin Anderson from Auchtermuchty, had a convincing 6-3,6-4 straight sets victory over Jimmy Noble from Aberdeen and Robert Slade from Cheshire at the Scottish Seniors Championships.

The match started in almost gale-force wind conditions and finished in steady drenching rain, but the conditions did not deter them. Both Ian and Colin play for the West of Scotland over 65’s County squad, which Ian captained last year, and compete in the British National Tennis County Championships.

They are also members of the Glasgow Wide Boys tennis team that tour Tuscany annually - with the team drawn from players throughout the UK with connections with Glasgow and Milngavie.

Hunter Reid, from Milngavie Tennis Club, said: “This was an outstanding performance by Ian and Colin and boads very well indeed for our tour in June which has been very successful organized for 16 consecutive years by Scottish Internationalists Ian Campbell and Laura Middleton.”
