A CHAMPION bowler has played his first international cap - narrowly missing out on victory.

Gavin Ansari (24), a Lenzie Bowling Club member, was part of the Scottish team who beat Ireland and England in the Junior International Series Title over the weekend.

Sadly a loss against Wales meant the defending champions finished second in the tournament.

Being selected to play was a case of third time lucky for Gavin, who unsuccessfully took part in the Scottish trials in both 2010 and 2011.

He told the Herald: “I was starting to think that if it didn’t happen this year it just wasn’t going to happen, but I’m really excited to be selected.

“I started at Lenzie Bowling Club when I was ten. I was rubbish at the start and I actually lost my first junior title 21-0!”

But the Housing Support Officer’s potential was soon spotted by the club’s coaches and he is now captain of Dumbartonshire Bowling Association’s under-25 team, as well as bowling for the senior team and winning his club championship three times in the past four years.
