Lenzie Bowling Club back on the greens and looking to attract new members

But as we emerge cautiously from the socially repressive effects of lockdown, there is opportunity once again for them to thrive, particularly those that can offer outdoor activities for all ages in a controlled environment.

Lenzie Bowling Club are among those hoping to prosper again after an inspection gave them a clean bill of health for their level of compliance with Covid protocols.

Advice received on seating layouts has even allowed them to safely increase the capacity in their clubhouse, with more seating flexibility for members and greater reassurance that they can comfortably make use of the indoor facilities.

The club’s designated Covid officer, Ronnie Houston, told Bowls Scotland: “I would encourage all clubs to engage with their local compliance officers.

"Whilst we still have frustrations around the requirements for table service and restrictions on individual members using the kitchen facilities, the inspection was most helpful, with much focus on not having seats too distant as this would only encourage raised voices.”

Thanks to the determination of volunteers, the season at Lenzie is now in full swing following a successful opening day

“It was clear right from opening day just how much members had missed the company of others,” said Ronnie.

Last year did see a season of sorts, but it was far from normal, with no main club competitions and social interaction limited due to the main clubhouse remaining closed.

But with much learned about matters such as signage and hygiene requirements, distancing, one-way systems and track and trace, there is real optimism that 2021 can be much closer to normality.

Internal competitions are already under way and attendances at their points and umbrell a sweep games are increasing.

Ronnie said: “ The hard-working volunteers at Lenzie have successfully implemented Covid guidance and reassured their members about coming back.”
