Allan Glen’s edged out Helensburgh 27-25 in another close and exciting BT West Division 1 match at the Bearyards on Saturday.
It took only six minutes for Glen’s centre Thomson to open the scoring, outpacing the visiting backs to touch down after an intelligent kick ahead.
Helensburgh replied quickly with a try by Drake after persistent pressure on the home line. A few minutes later Gibson added to the visitors score after catching the home scrum half, picking up the resultant loose ball and touching down. Drake converted.
But it was then Glen’s turn to turn on the style with Kirk scoring twice, first from a good back move and then after running from his own 22.
Thomson converted the second to make it 17-12 to Glen’s at half-time.
Just after the restart Glen’s added another try, McConnell breaking two tackles from visitors’ 22 to score in the corner. Again Thomson converted.
Helensbugh’s produced sustained pressure but heroic defence by the home side it was only in the last 10 minutes that they were able to break the home defence through Gregan and Musset.
The 2nd XV also won 37-32 over Hillhead/Jordanhill but the under-18s lost by a single point, 26-25, to Cumnock.
