Rob Roy 2
Two second half Ryan Tiffney penalty strikes secured Rabs a place in the third round draw of the Scottish Cup but they were made to battle for their win against a physical East Region side in what was far from a classic cup-tie.
After a evenly contested opening period Rabs’ Upton fired wide from the edge of the box in the 18th minute, then a minute later in a quick counter home attack Chris Hunter sent over a cross into the Rabs penalty box, but Kenny Erskine could only head over the bar from a few yards out.
Downie had a chance for the hosts but his effort lacked power and failed to trouble Murdoch in the Rabs goal.
In the 35th minute McMenamin was fouled by Butler on the edge of the penalty box, Scott Upton took the free-kick which was well saved by keeper Barrie Hunter.
In the 38th minute Tiffney brought out a fine save from Hunter then a minute before the break the Rabs striker had the ball in the net only to be ruled offside.
The second half was barely a minute old when Rabs were awarded a penalty after Tiffney was barged in the back when through on goal.
Referee McFadyean had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, Ryan Tiffney took the spot kick himself, giving Hunter no chance with his well placed kick from the spot.
The home side were reduced to ten men in the 66th minute when Downie picked up a second yellow card for a crude tackle on Upton and was ordered off.
In the 83rd minute Pumpherston defender Forret became the 8th player to enter the referee’s note book.
The tie was settled in the 85th minute when defender Butler handled in the box and from the resultant spot-kick Tiffney hammered the ball low past Hunter, much to the delight of the good sized Kirky travelling support.
